YOUR OWN STEM CELLS
Regenerative Stem Cell Therapy is one option patients have to help alleviate back pain, reduce dependency on long-term medication use, and return to an active lifestyle. Our procedure is unique as it uses your own stem cells to help your body regenerate and restore degenerative changes within the discs and joints of the spine. This procedure may allow you to experience a return to a higher level of activity with less pain and fewer medications. Patients who suffer from the following conditions are good candidates for Regenerative Stem Cell Therapy.
- Chronic back pain sufferers who are looking for an alternative, non-surgical treatment
- Chronic back pain sufferers who are not a candidate for traditional surgery
- Lumbar degenerative disc disease
- Lumbar disc annular tear or disc bulges
- Previous lumbar disc injury
- Lumber Facet Joint Arthritis
- Cervical Facet Join Arthritis
WHAT ARE STEM CELLS AND HOW DO THEY WORK?
- Human stem cells are undifferentiated cells waiting to become specialized cells.
- Mesenchymal stem cells are cells that can become cartilage and help maintain/replenish is as needed.
- Once injected into body tissue (i.e. disc or cartilage) the stems cells are “programmed” to become that tissue.
- The now “programmed” mesenchymal stem cells can proliferate indefinitely to reproduce indefinitely to reproduce more of the same cells, thus helping the body reduce inflammation, maintain healthy tissue, and help restore and heal damaged tissue.
WHY TRUST OUR REGENERATIVE STEM CELL PROCESS?
We use your own stem cells to help treat your unique source of pain: no frozen cells from another body. Newly harvested stem cells are best. Once your stem cells are removed, we immediately process, prep, and then re-inject them back into your body. No freezing or second-visit injections needed. Experience: Dr. Leary has over 7-years of experience performing this procedure, the most of any spine surgeon in the San Diego area for this technique. Pain Management: Our unique protocol begins the day before the procedure. This helps to reduce discomfort both during and after the procedure.
How Do We Get Your Stem Cells?
- Utilizing strict sterile surgical techniques, Dr. Leary will aspirate the stem cells from the bone marrow of your iliac crest (rounded portion of bone of the pelvis, at the level of your belt line).
- The aspirated stem cells are then immediately concentrated on-site while you wait, no need for freezing/thawing or risk of damaging to the cells.
- Once concentrated and prepared, the stem cells are ready for injection; with a total turnaround time of approximately 15-30 minutes from when the stem cells were extracted.
Regeneration of the Lumbar Disc(s)
- Fluoroscopy is used to target the disc space and guide the placement of a thin needle into the selected disc(s) spaces.
- Once the needle is in place within the disc space and the stem cells are prepared, Dr. Leary will begin the process of injecting the stem cells into each disc space.
- Upon completion, the need is removed and a simple Band-Aid is all that is needed to cover the site, no incision or sutures are needed.
Regeneration of the Joint Cartilage
- Fluoroscopy is used to target the facet joint and guide the needle placement into the selected joint.
- After confirmation of the proper needle placement in the joint, Dr. Leary will begin the process of injecting the stem cells into the joint and the surrounding joint capsule.
- Once completed, the needle is removed and the next targeted facet join is treated.
- Due to the number of stem cells available within your body, multiple disc spaces and facet joins may be targeted and treated in this single procedure.
